Claude Cowork vs Chat: What Changes When Claude Can Use Your Files?
In this guide
Claude Cowork changes the stakes because Claude can act on files, not just discuss them. With access you grant, it can read, create, and edit files in connected folders. The safest starting point is a dedicated folder containing separate copies of only the files you want changed, with backups stored elsewhere.
One important update: Anthropic is gradually merging Chat and Cowork into a single conversation experience. Some accounts still show both options; others do not. The practical question is therefore less about which tab you choose and more about what Claude can access and do.
Chat, Cowork, and Claude Code: what differs?
In the separate-mode experience, regular Chat is primarily conversational; it does not automatically receive direct access to local folders. Cowork handles multi-step work using permitted files and tools. Sharing an uploaded document in a conversation is not the same as authorizing direct changes to a folder.
Claude Code is designed for software engineering, including writing and debugging code. Cowork applies a similar agentic approach to knowledge work such as research, analysis, and document creation, without requiring a terminal. These are workflow distinctions, not guarantees that one option is automatically safer.
In the unified experience, a conversation can answer a question or undertake a task. Check permissions rather than assuming that something labeled “chat” cannot take actions.
Preparation checklist
- Check eligibility. Official documentation lists Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Desktop support covers macOS and Windows, with the latest Windows app required. Web and mobile access exists; Team web/mobile access is in beta, and Enterprise access depends on administrator enablement. Do not assume every feature exists on every platform.
- Check the desktop requirement. Direct local-file access requires Claude Desktop open and connected. A cloud task reaching connected local folders also depends on how the session was started; the cross-device guide specifies desktop-started sessions or scheduled tasks.
- Separate originals from working copies. Copy each file that may change into a dedicated task folder. Keep credentials, financial records, personal documents, and unrelated files outside it.
- Keep an independent backup. Working copies and approval prompts do not replace backups. Confirm you can restore important originals before authorizing edits.
- Set a narrow outcome. Specify input files, output names, and a separate output location. Avoid vague instructions such as “clean up everything.”
File changes and approvals need separate attention
Connected-folder access allows real reads and writes. Anthropic documents explicit permission before Cowork permanently deletes files. That protection is not a promise that every edit, overwrite, or organizational change is harmless or reversible.
Start with Manual approval and inspect requests. Connector permissions still matter: a tool already set to “Always allow” may be approved without a new prompt. Auto mode uses automated safety checks but cannot guarantee safety. Some experiences also offer Skip, which removes those automatic checks; the unified experience lists Manual and Auto.
A conservative first task is to request an inventory and proposed changes without editing anything. Then approve a small transformation on the copies. Ask for a list of created and changed files, and compare the actual outputs yourself before replacing originals.
Folder limits are not the whole security boundary
Do not enable unnecessary connectors, browser access, or applications. Cowork follows configured network egress permissions, but Anthropic explicitly says those permissions do not apply to web fetch, web search, or MCP tools, including Claude in Chrome. A network allowlist is therefore not a universal restriction on every information channel.
Cloud tasks process work on Anthropic’s servers, including local files opened through Desktop. An isolated execution environment does not mean your files remain exclusively on your computer, nor does it prevent misuse of access you have granted.
Prompt injection can arrive through websites, emails, or documents and try to redirect a legitimate task. Safeguards reduce risk; they do not eliminate it. Computer use introduces another boundary: Claude interacts with actual applications, with no sandbox between it and what is on your screen. Stop unexpected activity rather than approving a broader request just to finish faster.
Review before trusting the result
Check filenames, content, formulas, and whether anything outside the agreed scope changed. Keep permissions narrow for the next task too. This is a documentation-based guide, not a hands-on test or a claim that Cowork can safely replace your judgment or backups.
